DSA vs Aptitude: What to Study First for Placements
DSA vs aptitude for placements — how each is tested, which companies weight what, and how to split study time across both.
Both matter, but they are tested at different stages. Here is how to split your study time so neither round kills the application.
Where each one is tested
Aptitude and reasoning dominate the first-round online tests at service companies — TCS NQT, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant, and most campus drives screen on speed and accuracy here.
DSA dominates interviews and the coding sections of OAs at product companies — Amazon, Flipkart, Zomato, and the SP/DSE tracks at Infosys. The two rarely compete directly; they gate different stages.
How companies weight them
Service-based: aptitude test first, then technical interview on fundamentals with light coding. Product-based: OA with DSA coding first, then DSA interviews. A few companies — like TCS Digital and Infosys SP — explicitly require both aptitude and strong coding.
Check each company's pattern in advance. Preparing the wrong weightage wastes your best weeks.
The time split that works
Give DSA 60–70% of study time if product companies are the target; give aptitude 50–60% if service companies are primary. In all cases, both get weekly practice — aptitude is a speed skill, DSA is a depth skill, and neither survives a month of neglect.
Early in preparation, front-load DSA foundations (they take longest to build) while keeping aptitude in short daily drills. In the final month, shift to full mock tests mixing both.
Where to practice each
Use the aptitude guide at /blog/aptitude-questions-for-campus-placements for topic practice and mock tests, and the DSA question list at /blog/dsa-question-list-placements for the curated coding set — then combine both into company PYQ simulations at /pyqs.
