How to get an interview slot
Google internship applications (including SWE Intern and STEP) start on the careers portal, and referrals help but are not required. A resume that matches the role — projects, DSA, and impact written clearly — is what moves you to the next stage.
Do not wait for an offer deadline — apply early. Slots and interview capacity fill up during the season.
The phone screen
Shortlisted candidates get a 45-minute phone screen: one or two algorithm questions on a shared document. Interviewers score the approach, complexity, and code quality — not whether you saw the exact problem before.
Practice with a partner or tool where you code in a plain editor and explain out loud — most students fail the phone screen by coding silently.
The internship interviews
Passing the screen leads to 1–2 interviews (intern loops are shorter than full-time). Each is 45–60 minutes of problem solving: data structures, algorithms, and occasionally a small design or behavioral segment.
Across every round, interviewers evaluate four things: correct approach, clean code, clear communication, and handling follow-up constraints. The follow-up is where top candidates separate themselves.
How to prepare for the loop
