Group Discussion Format and Rules for Campus Placements

Group discussion format and rules for campus placements — time structure, speaking etiquette, and how GD is actually scored.

6 min readUpdated 2026-08-04

Group discussions look chaotic but follow a clear format and scoring. Here is what the panel is really watching.

The standard GD format

A group of 6–12 students gets one topic, 3–5 minutes to think, then 10–20 minutes of discussion. No formal turn order — the panel watches you earn speaking space. Some GDs end with a summary.

The moderator explains the rules, then leaves the group to manage the conversation. How you handle structure — not just content — is being scored.

How GD is scored

Panels score content (do you make valid points), structure (are points organized), participation (how often and how effectively you speak), listening (do you build on others), and language (clarity more than vocabulary).

Aggressive talking is not rewarded — quality of intervention counts more than quantity. A well-timed point in the middle beats a loud monologue at the start.

Speaking etiquette that scores

Let the topic settle, then be among the first third to speak — not necessarily first. Address the group, not the moderator. Use signposts: I agree with the last point, and I would add. Invite quieter members in — panels notice inclusive behavior.

Do not interrupt others mid-sentence, raise your voice over the room, or repeat points already made. Repeat what you heard, then add something new.

The summary round

Volunteer for the summary if you can capture both sides in 60 seconds: the consensus, the strongest argument for each side, and the conclusion. This is a high-scoring moment — prepare for it in advance by noting key points as the discussion unfolds.
