TCS NQT Syllabus and Marking Scheme 2026

TCS NQT 2026 syllabus, marking scheme, negative marking rules, and section-wise preparation — a complete breakdown for freshers.

7 min readUpdated 2026-08-09

Know the TCS NQT syllabus, how marks are awarded, and where negative marking actually applies before you sit the test.

TCS NQT section-wise syllabus

NQT (National Qualifier Test) typically combines: numerical ability (percentages, ratios, time-speed-distance, profit-loss), reasoning (series, seating, coding-decoding, puzzles), verbal ability (comprehension, grammar, vocabulary), and a programming section with MCQs plus coding.

The programming section uses a language of your choice (C, C++, Java, Python, or others) — pick your strongest language and practice the TCS-style easy problems like arrays, strings, and basic loops.

Marking scheme and negative marking

Negative marking rules have varied across NQT editions — some sections deduct marks for wrong answers, others award partial credit or none at all. The 2026 rules should be read from the official invitation; the general guidance is to attempt confidently but not blind-guess in sections with negative marking.

Programming MCQs often carry higher marks, and the coding problem usually has partial scoring — a partial solution still earns something, so always submit working code even if it fails some test cases.

How sections are weighed for shortlisting

TCS computes sectional and overall scores, and shortlisting for the interview is typically based on an overall cutoff with a coding-section requirement for some roles (Digital and Prime roles demand stronger coding).

A balanced score beats a brilliant aptitude score with weak coding if the role needs programming — practice both consistently.

Preparation plan for NQT

Spend 60% of your time on aptitude and reasoning basics (speed matters) and 40% on programming MCQs and one coding problem daily. Take 2–3 full mock tests under real timing, and review every mistake in a log.
